To prepare to direct Isn’t It Romantic, I watched 65 romantic comedies in 2 weeks - it turned my brain to mush and tenderized my heart. The idea was to decode all the bizarrely similar visual and narrative tropes in rom-coms. Once decoded, I could take those textures and build the movie out of them.
